Mike Thompson, AIA, CNU, NCIDQ — founder & principal. Thirty years of architecture, master planning, and watercolor illustration in service of authentic Southern communities.

Mike Thompson, founder & principal — Flowood, MS
Originally from New Orleans, Mike grew up surrounded by the timeless beauty of the French Quarter and Creole architecture — an influence that continues to shape his work today. After earning his degree from the School of Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1993, Mike began his career in a small Memphis office designing custom homes.
By 1996, he was leading design at Allen Hoshall, where he specialized in corporate offices, headquarters, and commercial/retail spaces. In 1999, Mike joined Michael Barranco in Jackson, MS, taking on a wide range of projects from master planning and New Urban developments to residential architecture. During this time, he collaborated with Duany Plater-Zyberk on charrettes across the U.S. and in Panama — experiences that deepened his love for the streets and architecture of New Orleans and sparked a lifelong passion for New Urbanism and Traditional Neighborhood Design.
In 2015, Mike founded Thompson Placemaking, focusing on authentic Southern architecture, Traditional Neighborhood Design, and mixed-use and residential projects. Today, he serves as Town Architect for several notable communities, including The Village at Madison, Annafeld in Billings, Adelaide in Starkville, and The Lamar in Oxford.
